Dr. Julie Shah

Biography

Julie Shah is the H.N. Slater Professor and Department Head at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics. With a strong focus on autonomous systems and human-robot collaboration, she has made significant contributions in various fields, including AI planning and scheduling, interactive robotics, and applications within aerospace, medical, and manufacturing domains. Dr. Shah’s teaching interests encompass human supervisory control of automated systems, real-time systems, and human-robot interaction. She earned her S.B. in 2004, S.M. in 2006, and Ph.D. in 2011, all from MIT. Her career at MIT includes positions as Associate Professor since 2015 and Boeing Assistant Professor from 2011 to 2015. Additionally, she has served as Associate Dean for Social and Ethical Responsibilities of Computing at the Schwarzman College of Computing. Outside MIT, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at Boeing Research and Technology in 2010-2011. Dr. Shah is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and is actively involved in promoting responsible computing education and research. She is also affiliated with the Interactive Robotics Group at the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT.
