Dr. Julie Smith

Biography

Julie P. Smith is an Honorary Associate Professor at the Australian National University, recognized for her contributions to the fields of economics, particularly in health and maternal child health. She completed her PhD at ANU in 2002, under the Australian Postgraduate Award, and has held significant research positions, including at the Australian Centre for Economic Research on Health and the Menzies Centre for Health Policy. Over her career, she has published more than 60 papers focusing on subjects such as breastfeeding economics, regulation of markets around maternal milk, and taxation policies in Australia. Dr. Smith has been involved in multiple funded projects by the Australian Research Council (ARC) concerning the economics of breastfeeding, the gender analysis of fiscal policies, and the health care financing landscape in Australia. Her expertise has also led her to serve as a consultant for government inquiries and strategies related to breastfeeding and taxation. Notably, she has contributed to public inquiries on breastfeeding and has a strong background in advising policy on smoking cessation and economic impacts on public health.
