Biography

Julie Tolentino is a Filipino-Salvadoran interdisciplinary artist whose work spans durational performance, installation, scent and object-making, as well as text. She has exhibited in various prestigious venues, including the 2022 Whitney Biennial, Participant, Inc., Performance Space New York, New Museum, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Nevada Art Museum. Her collaborative projects include the Visual AIDS Duets Book series with Kia LaBeija, the Movements Blue HIV Doula Collective, and the Safer Sex Handbook with Cynthia Madansky. Tolentino is an accomplished editor, currently serving as the senior editor for TDR-The Drama Review since 2012. She earned her MFA as a Dean's Distinguished Fellow in Experimental Choreography from the University of California, Riverside in 2020. Her recent accolades include the USArtist International award (2022), the Anonymous Woman Herb Alpert/UCROSS Residency Prize (2021), and the Queer|Art Sustained Artist Recognition (2020). She has held prestigious academic positions, including Scholar-in-Residence at NYU Steinhardt and as a faculty member at Cal Arts School of Art, where she joined the faculty in Winter 2022. Additionally, she contributes to the Commonwealth Council in Los Angeles from 2022 to 2024 as a Queer|Art Mentor.
