Biography

Julie Wartell is a continuing lecturer and staff research associate in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of California San Diego. She has taught various courses including GIS Urban Community Planning, Environmental Design Crime Prevention, and Research Methods: Crime Analysis. In her research capacity, she coordinated GIS data within the Homelessness Hub at UC San Diego, collaborating with policymakers and NGOs to advance knowledge in homelessness and effective planning decision-making. Wartell has over 25 years of experience conducting applied research on crime prevention and reduction, utilizing geographic information systems in urban community planning. Additionally, she has explored the impacts of breweries on neighborhood change. Her research has resulted in the authorship, co-authorship, and co-editing of over 40 books and articles, which are used by academics and practitioners in numerous cities and countries globally. Wartell has been invited to present her expertise at conferences and directly to governmental agencies, non-profits, and communities.
