Julieta Paez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Developmental Bioengineering at the University of Twente. She obtained her PhD in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina, Argentina, where she focused on the synthesis of polymeric materials for sensing and antifouling applications. After her doctorate, she spent time at the Free University Berlin investigating biofunctional polymeric-protein surfaces before joining the Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz as a Postdoctoral researcher. At Max-Planck, she developed photoactivatable peptides for cell-instructive materials used in functional polymers for tissue gluing applications. Paez later moved to the Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrücken as a Research Scientist Project Leader, where she developed novel coupling chemistries for bioconjugation and gelation under physiological conditions. Since 2021, she has been with the University of Twente, leading a team focused on developing chemical strategies to engineer smart hydrogels that interact with living cells for healthcare applications. Her work involves collaboration with colleagues at the TechMed Centre MESA+ Institute, exploring the use of materials as key enabling technologies in the fabrication, characterization, and validation of advanced tissue models for regenerative medicine.
