Biography

Juliette Legler is a Professor of Toxicology at Utrecht University, leading the Division of Toxicology within the Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS). From 2020 to 2022, she headed the Department of Population Health Sciences at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her previous roles include being a leader in the Environmental Health Theme at Brunel University London from 2018 and a Professor of Toxicology at the Institute for Environmental Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam from 2013. She has notable recognition in the field, serving as the President of the Netherlands Society of Toxicology from 2019 to 2022 and receiving the Poulsson Prize in 2018. Her research primarily focuses on the molecular mechanisms of toxicity caused by environmental contaminants and their long-term health effects on humans and wildlife, particularly during early developmental exposure. Legler has coordinated significant European projects such as GOLIATH and participates in initiatives surrounding endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and microplastics. Her recent work includes the NWA-funded project on animal-free testing methods for EDCs and leading the Dutch Microplastics Human Health Consortium. She is also an author for the upcoming UNEP/WHO report on EDCs.
