Dr. Julio Ottino

Biography

Julio M. Ottino is the Dean of the Robert R. McCormick School of Engineering and Applied Science at Northwestern University and a distinguished professor in Chemical Biological Engineering. He has held prestigious positions at UMass Amherst and other esteemed institutions including Caltech and Stanford. Julio founded the Northwestern Institute on Complex Systems (NICO) and has initiated multiple university-wide programs that focus on design, energy sustainability, human-computer interaction, and entrepreneurship. His research on fluid mixing and granular dynamics has significantly impacted physical and geophysical sciences and engineering. He supervised over 65 Ph.D. theses and authored the influential monograph 'The Kinematics of Mixing', which has been cited over 3,500 times. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences, Julio has received numerous prestigious awards, including the APS Fluid Dynamics Prize and the G.I. Taylor Medal. He has a deep commitment to mentoring and advising, having served as a senior advisor for Unilever and a member of the technical advisory board for Dow Chemical. His recent book, 'Nexus,' published by MIT Press, explores the intersection of creativity, innovation, art, technology, and science.
