Biography

Julio Villa-Palomino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. He completed his Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, an M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida, and a B.A. in Sociology from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú. His research primarily focuses on medical sociocultural anthropology, particularly examining themes of mental health, psychiatric expertise, ethics, and the politics of care and violence in Peru and Latin America. Currently, he is working on a book titled 'Discharged: Mental Health, Suspicion, Care in Peru,' which ethnographically explores Peru’s transition to a Community Mental Health model and the implications of psychiatric deinstitutionalization. Villa-Palomino's research agenda also includes projects on the afterlives of closed psychiatric hospitals, mental health disability activism in Latin America, and art therapy for individuals with severe mental illness. Apart from his teaching and research, he is involved with the Center for Global Health Equity and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
