Biography

Jun-Kun Wang joined UC San Diego in July 2023 as an Assistant Professor at the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute and jointly appointed in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Prior to this role, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Wang earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Georgia Tech, and also holds a Master of Science in Communication Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University. His research aims to make algorithms faster and to build robust theoretical foundations while overcoming issues of model mis-specification and distribution shifts that are often encountered during the deployment of machine learning methods in real-world contexts. He is particularly interested in the interplay between optimization, sampling, and machine learning, and enjoys discovering connections within various research areas such as no-regret learning and tackling distribution shifts. His work focuses on acceleration techniques in optimization and sampling as well as on trustworthy machine learning.
