Biography

Jun Korenaga is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University. His research interests center on the evolution of the Earth and the emergence of life, as well as the subsequent evolution of the solar system. Korenaga places particular emphasis on the dynamics of the Earth’s mantle, focusing on the parental nature of continental and oceanic crust, and the thermal and chemical interactions between the core and mantle. He enjoys tackling long-standing problems by combining physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, and statistics to develop new observational and theoretical methods. A self-described freestyle geophysicist, Korenaga's work includes diverse topics such as plate tectonics evolution, lithosphere mantle dynamics, chemical geodynamics, and the thermal evolution of Mars, Venus, and exoplanets. Current projects involve experimental rock mechanics, geodynamical modeling, and seismic imaging deep in the Earth. He has mentored numerous students and postdoctoral researchers in various aspects of geophysics and planetary sciences, fostering a collaborative environment for research at Yale.
