Biography

Jun 'Kelly' Liu is a Professor in Molecular Biology and Genetics, holding the Robert J. Appel Professorship in Molecular Cell Biology at Cornell University. He joined the faculty in late 2001 and is a member of the Graduate Fields of Genetics, Genomics & Development, and Biochemistry, Molecular & Cell Biology. His research is primarily funded by the National Institutes of Health and focuses on the free-living nematode C. elegans as a model system. His lab investigates new components of the highly conserved BMP signaling pathway and the mechanisms by which pluripotent precursor cells differentiate into various cell types. Liu employs a blend of molecular, genetic, and biochemical approaches to enhance understanding of developmental processes and stem cell biology. He participates actively in outreach efforts to broaden access to STEM research for K-12 students and educators. Liu has received several accolades, including the National Academy of Sciences Kavli Frontiers of Science Fellowship and various teaching awards from Cornell University. He is dedicated to engaging students and making scientific education accessible and stimulating.
