Biography

June Madeley is an Associate Professor and Chair at the University of New Brunswick in Saint John. She teaches in the Information Communication Studies program within the Department of Social Science. She earned her PhD from the Sociology Department at McMaster University, where she researched class, gender, and television viewership, and has an MA in Sociology from Dalhousie University. Madeley began her academic career in the Sociology and Social Studies Department at the University of Regina, where she received her BA. She joined the faculty at UNB Saint John in 2006. Her research primarily focuses on audience reception and media fandom, with current projects including the reception of manga (Japanese comics) among Anglo-Japanese readers and the historical structure of the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon). She teaches courses on the intersection of media and everyday life, the history of communications, media production, and electronic research methods. Her scholarly work includes articles and book chapters on themes such as transnational convergence culture and the gendered audience reception of English-translated manga.
