Biography

Junhyong Kim is the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests are centered on Computational Biology, Evolution, Genetics, Epigenetics, and Genomics. Dr. Kim explores fundamental mechanisms governing the dynamics of organism evolution through quantitative modeling and experimental methods. His lab has made significant strides in Single Cell Functional Genomics, collaborating closely with Dr. Jim Eberwine to characterize the transcriptome levels of individual cells. His ongoing projects include the exploration of how single-cell variations can lead to significant phenotypical changes under different environmental stressors, using methodologies such as single cell RNA sequencing. In addition to his work on single cells, Dr. Kim investigates the evolutionary dynamics of neuronal functions in rodent species, particularly focusing on dendritic RNA localization and its implications for neuronal function. Throughout his career, he has developed numerous innovative algorithms and statistical models that contribute to understanding biological data. He teaches courses including Introduction to Computational Biology and Biological Modeling, shaping the next generation of scientists in these crucial fields.
