Biography

Jürg Bähler obtained his PhD from the University of Bern in Switzerland. He worked as a Research Associate in Switzerland and Japan, and later as a Postdoctoral Fellow with John Pringle at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA. Bähler was also associated with the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London, UK. In 2000, he joined the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, UK, where he served as Group Leader. He was appointed Professor of Molecular Systems Biology at University College London in 2009 and became the Director of UCL’s Institute of Healthy Ageing in 2019. Bähler is a full member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology. His laboratory employs a variety of genetic, cellular, and systems-level approaches to analyze the regulation and function of genomes, particularly focusing on aging-associated processes in non-dividing and dormant cells, as well as the relationships between genotype, phenotype, and the environment.
