Biography

Professor Jürgen Geist, born in 1977, specializes in Aquatic Systems Biology. His research focuses on developing biologically-based models to understand the spatial distribution and biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems, integrating molecular biology and ecological approaches. He emphasizes the quality of aquatic habitats and studies the genetic and demographic structures of fish and mussel populations, as well as aquatic food webs. He has a strong interest in identifying stress biomarkers to indicate pollution levels in water bodies. He completed his doctorate in genetics and ecology at the Technical University of Munich in 2005, followed by a postdoctoral grant that took him to the University of California, Davis. In 2008, he became a junior professor in functional aquatic ecology and was later appointed Chair of Aquatic Systems Biology at TUM in 2010. His contributions to the field have been recognized with various awards, including the Bavarian State Medal for outstanding achievements in the environment, and he has received excellence awards for academic teaching from TUM.
