Jürgen Ruland focuses his research on signaling processes within the immune system, specifically how normal and deregulated behaviors contribute to disease. His research group studies how normal immune cells recognize pathogens and initiate immune defense mechanisms. They also investigate how pathologically deregulated signals in blood cells contribute to cancer development, aiming to provide a basis for therapeutic manipulation of the immune system. After studying medicine at Giessen and Pittsburgh, Ruland has held positions at TUM, Freiburg University, and the Ontario Cancer Institute, and he became the head of a junior research group funded by the German Cancer Aid at TUM in 2003. He completed his postdoctoral studies in medicine in 2005 and served as a professor of molecular immunology from 2010 until 2012. In 2012, he was appointed professor of clinical chemistry at TUM. Ruland is a member of several prestigious academies and has served on committees promoting young medical professionals and scientists. He has successfully raised an ERC Advanced Grant and has received multiple awards for his contributions to the field, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2021 and two ERC Advanced Grants in 2013 and 2019.
