Biography

Professor Schwarze holds the Edward Clark Chair in Child Life and Health at the University of Edinburgh. He is a pediatrician specializing in allergy and respiratory medicine, internationally recognized for his expertise in immune mechanisms related to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis and associated airway allergies. He qualified in Medicine from Freiburg University, Germany, in 1988 and trained as a pediatrician focused on respiratory medicine and pediatric allergies. He served as the clinical lead for the national Children's and Young People's Allergy Network in Scotland from 2011 to 2019. His research, initiated during his post-doctoral fellowship at the National Jewish Medical Research Center in Denver, Colorado, revolves around the immune responses to RSV and its contribution to allergic airway disease. After collaborating with various institutions, including Imperial College London, he moved to the Centre for Inflammation Research at the University of Edinburgh in 2007, assuming his current role in 2008. His studies aim to understand the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity in the context of viral infections and their implications for developing effective treatments.
