Biography

Professor Jürgen Schwarze holds the Edward Clark Chair in Child Life Health at the University of Edinburgh. He is a pediatrician specialized in allergy and respiratory medicine, with recognition as an expert in the immune mechanisms of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) bronchiolitis and associated airway allergies. Dr. Schwarze graduated in Medicine from Freiburg University, Germany, in 1988 and trained as a pediatrician focusing on allergy and respiratory conditions. He has held various key research positions, including a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Jewish Medical Research Center in Denver, Colorado. His research since 1994 has had significant implications for understanding RSV infections' health impacts on infants and children, focusing particularly on how these infections may lead to increased risk of asthma and respiratory issues later in life. He continues to explore the roles of lung dendritic cells and airway epithelial cells in modulating immune responses to respiratory viral infections. In addition to his primary research focus, Professor Schwarze actively collaborates in clinical research addressing allergy, asthma, and respiratory infections, contributing to national and international allergy networks.
