Jurgen Sygusch is an Associate Professor at the Université de Montréal Faculty of Medicine, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine. His research interests primarily revolve around the structural analysis of macromolecules and cellular signalling. Prof. Sygusch's work focuses on enzymatic catalysis, macromolecular interactions, and the design of inhibitors to understand the functions of proteins and enzymes at a molecular level. He has extensively studied glycolytic enzymes, particularly fructose 1,6-bisphosphate aldolase, shedding light on their catalytic mechanisms and their roles in numerous pathologies including cancer and diabetes. His recent research has expanded to explore the DNA binding activities of plant transcription factors to enhance plant resistance against diseases. He employs various experimental techniques including protein crystallography, molecular dynamics, and enzymology in his studies. Prof. Sygusch also has a longstanding interest in the applications of microgravity to protein crystal growth.
