Biography

Justin Benesch is a Professor of Biophysical Chemistry at the University of Oxford. He obtained a degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and a PhD from the University of Cambridge for his work on novel mass spectrometry techniques under the supervision of Professor Dame Carol Robinson. His research focuses on developing experimental methodologies to gain insights into the states and structures that proteins adopt. His recent work integrates data using computational strategies and evolutionary history to uncover the determinants of biomolecular function. He has demonstrated how mass spectrometry can be used to probe and manipulate individual protein states, shedding light on molecular recognition and protein interactions. Benesch’s contributions to understanding protein evolution and interactions under physical stresses have garnered him an international reputation. He is the founder of Refeyn Ltd, which offers mass photometry solutions to the life sciences community. His research group’s efforts have been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Alfred Tiessieres Award and the Norman Heatley Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry.
