Professor Justin Cobb graduated in medicine from Magdalen College, Oxford in 1982 and trained in Oxford, London, and Brighton. He completed his master’s thesis in 1991 and was appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Middlesex Hospital. In 1992, he was awarded the prestigious Hunterian Professorship and, subsequently, spent 15 years as a consultant at University College London Hospitals. Professor Cobb has been instrumental in developing the Acrobot, a world-first haptic-based robotic assistant for surgery, and has built the MSk Lab in the Sir Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Hub. His laboratory focuses on innovative research in musculoskeletal engineering with a wide array of engineering and medical professionals collaborating on various projects. Current major research themes include novel device design, enhanced reality surgical skills, and the impact of physical activity and medication on bone health. He has received significant funding from organizations like the Wellcome Trust and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. Professor Cobb was also awarded a CVO for his services to the field and for his care for patients.
