Dr. Justin Hughes

Biography

Justin Hughes is the Hon. William Matthew Byrne Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, where he teaches courses in intellectual property and international trade. From 2009 to 2013, Professor Hughes served in the Obama Administration as a Senior Advisor to the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. In this role, he was the chief negotiator for multilateral treaties, including the Beijing Treaty on Audiovisual Performances in 2012 and the Marrakesh Treaty for the Blind in 2013. He received his education from Oberlin College and Harvard University. Additionally, Professor Hughes has a background in international arbitration in Paris and was a Henry Luce Scholar. He has clerked for the Lord President of the Supreme Court in Malaysia. Between 2006 and 2009, he served as the Chairman of the Technicolor/Thomson Foundation for Film and Television Heritage. Professor Hughes is also involved in volunteer work aimed at democracy development in various countries, including Albania, Bosnia, El Salvador, Haiti, and Mali.
