Justin Leroy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at Duke University. His research focuses on 19th-century African American history, with particular expertise in intellectual history, Black political thought, slavery, emancipation, and racial capitalism. Leroy’s book, 'Lowest Freedom,' recovers an unexamined tradition of 19th-century Black thought and locates the failures of emancipation within the contexts of political exclusion, racial violence, and the various forms of economic dispossession that continue to define Black life and freedom. In addition to his work in history, he also holds an appointment in the African & African American Studies program, where he further explores themes of racial capitalism and its historical entanglements with slavery and settler colonialism.
