Biography

Justin McDaniel is the Edmund J. and Louise W. Kahn Endowed Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on Lao, Thai, Pali, and Sanskrit literature, art, architecture, and manuscript studies. He has published numerous works, including books such as 'Gathering Leaves Lifting Words,' which won the Harry Benda Prize, and 'Lovelorn Ghost Magic Monk,' recipient of the Kahin Prize. In addition, McDaniel is recognized for his contributions to pedagogy, having received several teaching awards and being named among the top ten innovative professors in America by the Chronicle of Higher Education in 2019. As a Guggenheim Fellow and a fellow at Kyoto University's Center for Southeast Asian Studies, he has presented his scholarly work across twenty countries and is committed to student engagement in research.
