Biography

Justin Piché, PhD, is a Full Professor in the Department of Criminology and the Director of the Carceral Geography (Col)laboratory at the University of Ottawa. His research examines the material and symbolic dimensions of criminalization and punishment, policing, and punitive injustice, focusing on the contexts that open, close, and repurpose carceral infrastructures. He documents both the reproduction and resistance to penality, as well as the impacts of the long-standing and emerging crises that characterize the existence of carceral state entities. Professor Piché's current research projects, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, include partnerships and insights into disaster prisons, carceral space matters, and the nuances of prison tourism. He is a founding member of the Criminalization Punishment Education Project (CPEP) and has been involved in campaigns against building new provincial prisons. Awarded the 2012 SSHRC Aurora Prize, he has been recognized as a Young Researcher of the Year and continues to contribute significantly to the academic community and policy-making through his work and affiliations.
