Justin van der Hooft obtained his MSc in Molecular Sciences from Wageningen University. He took a PhD position in analytical biochemistry, developing methods for systematic metabolite identification and annotation using mass spectrometry and NMR techniques. He focused particularly on mass spectrometry fragmentation approaches to gather structural information on measured molecules. After obtaining his PhD in 2012, Justin worked in Glasgow on postdoctoral projects related to epicatechin bioavailability, drug screening, and bacterial metabolomics. In 2017, he returned to Wageningen to start a joint postdoc with Prof. Pieter Dorrestein’s group at UCSD and Dr. Marnix Medema’s group at WUR, focusing on combining genome and metabolome mining. In 2018, Justin started a three-year grant from the Netherlands eScience Center to further expand his work on metabolome mining, aiming to accelerate the deciphering of complex metabolic mixtures. He is an active member of the Metabolomics Society and was part of the founding committee of the Early-Careers Members Network. He has also served on the Board of Directors and Strategy Task Group of the Society. In 2020, he began building his own research group as an assistant professor in computational metabolomics at Wageningen University.
