Justin J. West is an associate professor of Music Human Learning at the Sarah Ernest Butler School of Music at The University of Texas at Austin. He focuses on the intersection of professional development interventions and policies that shape the quality of music teacher practice in the U.S. His research utilizes quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, and has been published in esteemed peer-reviewed journals including the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. He serves on the editorial boards of several journals, and is a member of the Research Publications Standing Committee of the American Choral Directors Association. Dr. West teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in choral methods, music education foundations, and arts education law and policy, and coordinates music education field experiences. Prior to his role at UT Austin, he was a music education faculty member at Louisiana State University. Dr. West holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of North Texas, an M.A. from Columbia University, and a B.M. from Lamar University. He has 20 years of experience as a church musician and currently serves as the music director at Calvary Episcopal Church in Bastrop, Texas.
