Biography

Professor Pila came to Oxford in 2004 to take posts at the Law Faculty and St Catherine's College. Research Fellow at the Institute of European and Comparative Law, Justine's research interests cover the fields of intellectual property, regulation, and law technology. She is the author of research monographs including 'Requirement of Invention Patent Law' (OUP 2010) and texts like 'European Intellectual Property Law' (1st edn OUP 2016, 2nd edn OUP 2019, PLC Torremans), and 'Seville's Intellectual Property Law and Policy' (3rd edn EE 2022). As an editor, she has published collections such as the 'Oxford Handbook of Intellectual Property Law' (OUP 2018, RC Dreyfuss). Recent works concern the UK IP system post-Brexit and the concept of inventorship, with forthcoming contributions to the 'UK Regulatory Framework post-Brexit: Law Unbound' (OUP 2026) and the 'Elgar Encyclopaedia of Intellectual Property' (2026). Currently, she is completing an article on the justificatory basis of authors' moral rights and working on a monograph on Law, Regulation, and Technology (OUP). Justine's teaching includes areas aligned with her research, and she supervises DPhil students across various disciplines. Initially, she obtained undergraduate degrees in Law and Arts from the University of Melbourne and worked as an IP solicitor before completing her PhD in Law at the same university.
