Dr. Jutta Arens

Biography

Jutta Arens is a Full Professor and Chair of Engineering Organ Support Technologies at the University of Twente's Department of Biomechanical Engineering. She has been with the university since November 2019, previously heading the Department of Cardiovascular Engineering at RWTH Aachen University, where she developed heart and lung assist devices. Her research primarily focuses on artificial organs, particularly artificial lungs and kidney replacements, emphasizing the integration of therapies for improved patient safety and long-term stability. She collaborates with partners from medical, natural, and engineering sciences to address the complexities associated with artificial lung systems. Her work includes developing miniaturized artificial organs for young patients, including an artificial placenta system for preterm infants. Jutta's academic qualifications include a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from RWTH Aachen University. In her free time, she enjoys long-distance hikes.
