Biography

Kaan Inal is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He received his undergraduate degree in 1996 and completed his Ph.D. in 2001. Dr. Inal joined the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo in 2006 and is currently the Associate Director of the Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR). He holds the NSERC/General Motors Industrial Research Chair in Integrated Computational Mechanics for Mass Efficient Automotive Structures. His primary research focuses on multi-scale modeling and the development of mechanism-driven advanced material models for metals and composites. He leads a research group that concentrates on artificial intelligence (AI) applications in solid mechanics to perform industrial scale simulations using advanced physics-based models. Dr. Inal's research group is developing AI-based numerical frameworks for micromechanics and advanced non-linear finite element method (FEM) problems associated with crashworthiness and fracture.
