Biography

Kaarina Valavaara is an instructor at Dalhousie University's School of Occupational Therapy, where she engages in advancing truth and reconciliation through occupational therapy research and education. Her work focuses on enhancing culturally safe, rights-based practices for Indigenous Peoples within the field of occupational therapy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies and a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy, both from the University of Alberta. Valavaara's teaching includes courses on health conditions' effects on occupational performance, occupational assessment, and advanced topics in occupational therapy. A co-chair for both the Occupational Therapy Truth and Reconciliation Task Force and the Occupational Therapy & Indigenous Peoples Health Practice Network, she is committed to promoting reconciliation and appropriate health care access for Indigenous communities. Recent publications reflect her dedication to addressing challenges faced by practitioners and advancing culturally sensitive practices.
