Kaitlynn Mendes is a sociologist whose work sits at the intersection of media, education, and politics. Her research and teaching adopt an intersectional feminist perspective to understand and combat gender inequalities related to media technologies. Using a mixed methods approach, she explores how digital technologies pave the way for new forms of online abuse while also being used to challenge sexism, sexual violence, rape culture, and harassment in offline spaces. Insights from her research are employed to inform policies and practices and to enhance public understanding of contemporary gender inequalities. She is the Principal Investigator of a five-year SSHRC project titled 'DIY: Digital Safety' and serves as the Director of the Gender, Equity, Media, and Society (GEMS) Research Lab. Her areas of specialization include gender inequality, sexual violence, young people, deepfakes, feminist activism, online harms, and technology-facilitated sexual violence.
