Kamelia Atefi-Monfared is an Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Department of Civil Engineering at York University. She is a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and participates in the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, as well as holding the position of secretary for the Technical Committee TC308 on Energy Geotechnics by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). With over 16 years of research experience, her work focuses on computational geomechanics to design environmentally friendly operations for energy and water production and storage, as well as resilient infrastructure in response to climate change. Her current research is centered on coupled processes in geomechanics involving biochemical, hydraulic, mechanical, and thermal dynamics within porous media, aiming to develop eco-friendly, bio-mediated techniques for stabilizing ground tailings and improving energy and water production/storage operations. She has obtained multiple competitive grants as Principal Investigator (PI), including from the NSERC Discovery and New Frontiers Research Fund (NFRF) Exploration, and received the TUST Paper Award in 2023 from the journal Tunneling Underground Space Technology (TUST).
