Biography

Kamran Asdar Ali is a professor and the Chair of the Department at the University of Texas, Austin. He has served as the Director of the South Asia Institute at the university from 2011 to 2017. He holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and has a robust academic background in anthropology, Middle East Studies, and Asian Studies. His research interests include gender, sexuality, health, political economy, post-colonialism, labor history, and popular culture, particularly as they relate to the Middle East and South Asia. Ali has authored several influential books, including 'Planning Family in Egypt: New Bodies, New Selves' and 'Communism in Pakistan: Politics, Class, and Activism 1947-1972.' His scholarly contributions extend beyond books to numerous articles discussing themes of health, gender, ethnicity, class politics, and sexuality in the regions he specializes in. Ali has held prestigious fellowships, including a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and a senior fellowship at ISIM, University of Leiden.
