Biography

Kandis Leslie Gilliard-AbdulAziz directs the Sustainable Lab, focusing on developing novel materials for sustainable catalytic processes in low-carbon chemical production. Her primary research interests include novel materials development, carbon dioxide sequestration, and utilization, employing an interdisciplinary toolset that spans chemistry, material science, and chemical and environmental engineering. Previously, Gilliard-AbdulAziz served as the director of the Sustainable Lab at the University of California, Riverside, from 2018 to 2023. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and was a Provost postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to her academic career, she worked as a forensic scientist for the Philadelphia Police Department and as a refinery chemist at Sunoco Chemicals in Philadelphia. Her research aligns with issues surrounding the circular carbon economy, carbon capture, sequestration and utilization, and waste biomass valorization, as well as heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis.
