Biography

Kanna Hayashi joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University in September 2016. She holds Master's degrees in International Affairs and Public Health, and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies. As a Research Scientist at the BC Centre on Substance Use, Dr. Hayashi has received several prestigious academic awards, including the Royal Society of Canada’s Alice Wilson Award and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator Award. In 2016, she participated in the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Scientific Consultation on HIV and drugs, where she served as a group lead and co-drafted the Scientific Statement 'Science addressing drugs and HIV: State of the Art'. Her primary research interests focus on social clinical epidemiology of substance use, community-based research, harm reduction, and equity-promoting approaches to drug policy programming. Dr. Hayashi leads the Vancouver Injection Drug Users Study (VIDUS), one of the largest and longest-running prospective cohort studies of community-recruited individuals who use drugs in the world, and collaborates with various organizations on participatory research projects. Her teaching interests include substance use epidemiology, social epidemiology, and drug policy education.
