Biography

Kanwal's scholarly interests lie at the intersection of finance, entrepreneurship, and governance. As a faculty advisor for the UCeed Haskayne Student Fund, a million-dollar venture capital fund managed by students, Kanwal is dedicated to fostering innovative business ideas within the University of Calgary. Additionally, Kanwal has designed and delivered courses for the Creative Destruction Lab Rockies at the Haskayne School of Business. After completing an undergraduate degree in finance at IBA in Pakistan, Kanwal pursued an MBA and a doctorate in business administration at Haskayne. During doctoral studies, Kanwal served as the academic lead for the Financial Feminism Investing Lab, which focuses on investment education through a gender-informed lens. Research efforts include examining investment decisions made by business angels and venture capitalists, leading to a defended thesis in November 2022 under the supervision of Dr. Seok-Woo Kwon. The thesis was a finalist for the 2023 Heizer Prize for doctoral dissertations in the field of venture capital and was presented at the Academy of Management's entrepreneurship division. With more than ten years of experience in investment banking, private equity, and capital markets worldwide, Kanwal also possesses significant board-level experience in non-profit management.
