Biography

Kara Kockelman is a registered professional engineer with a Ph.D., M.S., and B.S. in civil engineering, as well as a master's degree in city planning with a minor in economics from the University of California at Berkeley. She has been a professor of transportation engineering at the University of Texas at Austin for 26 years and serves as the associate site director for the NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center focused on Efficient Vehicles and Sustainable Transportation Systems. Kockelman has authored 230 journal articles and books, with primary research interests including planning for shared autonomous vehicle systems, statistical modeling of urban systems, energy and climate issues, and the economic impacts of transport policy and crash occurrence. Additionally, she holds multiple appointments, including at the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Texas at Austin.
