Biography

Kara N Maxwell, MD/PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Genetics at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Abramson Cancer Center and serves as a Staff Physician at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Dr. Maxwell's educational background includes a BS in Genetics and Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a PhD in Molecular Cellular Biology from Rockefeller University, and an MD from Weill Cornell Medical College. Her clinical and research interests are centered around cancer genetics with a particular focus on familial breast and prostate cancers, cancer risk evaluation, and the implications of genetic predispositions to cancer. She leads the Maxwell Lab, which conducts research on inherited cancer syndromes, interested in understanding tumor formation processes in patients with inherited cancers. Dr. Maxwell actively collaborates with cross-disciplinary colleagues and is involved in numerous clinical research projects. She is a founding member of the EDISYN consortium aimed at early cancer detection.
