Biography

Professor Karen Bell currently researches and teaches Transition, environmental justice, and eco-social policy politics. Prior to 2008, she was a community development coordinator, working alongside disadvantaged communities to address issues of social inequality, racism, disability discrimination, environmental exclusion, and inequity. She gradually moved towards community environmental research, completing her PhD in Environmental Justice at the University of Bristol in 2011. Karen has carried out various research projects, including ‘Achieving Environmental Justice,’ which analyzed and compared environmental justice strategies and outcomes across a variety of political, economic, and cultural settings, including the UK, South Korea, Sweden, China, Bolivia, and Cuba. Her recent work on ‘Fair and Inclusive Social Environmental Transition Alternatives’ continues this comparative theme, emphasizing transition paradigms like the ‘Green Economy’ and ‘Living Well’ (Vivir Bien). She has conducted qualitative research on ‘Working-Class Environmentalism’ to build an environmental movement that is attractive to a wider range of social groups and has investigated the intersection of Labour and Sustainability studies in collaboration with Trade Unions. Current projects include ‘Critically Green: Mineral Extraction Military’ and ‘Gypsies Forging Sustainable Futures: Representing Romani Environmental Knowledge and Practices Through Traditional Metal Artwork and Dance.’
