Biography

Karen Chapple is a Professor Emerita of City & Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley, where she held the Carmel P. Friesen Chair in Urban Studies and served as department chair. She is currently the Director of the School of Cities and a Professor of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on inequalities in planning and development, governance, and regional issues in the U.S. and Latin America, with an emphasis on economic development and housing. She has published several influential books, such as "Planning Sustainable Cities and Regions: Equitable Development," which won the John Friedmann Book Award from the American Collegiate Schools of Planning, and has contributed to a wide array of subjects including urban displacement and community investment in various renowned journals. Chapple also co-founded the Urban Displacement Project, a research portal aimed at understanding and addressing patterns of residential, commercial, and industrial displacement. She has received numerous accolades including the 2017 UC-Berkeley Chancellor's Award for Research in the Public Interest and the Fulbright Global Scholar Award to further expand her research initiatives internationally. Chapple has served as a faculty director at the UC Berkeley Center for Community Innovation and has engaged in various local and regional development projects in several countries, providing policy advice to elected officials and actively contributing to the academic community through her teaching and research.
