Karen Cuthbert is a lecturer in Sociological and Cultural Studies at the University of Glasgow, and has a background in working-class education. She is a beneficiary of the Widening Access Participation programme and felt a moment of disbelief when asked to write her university staff profile. Before her current role, she held various positions, including as a researcher for the Making Space Queer Religious Youth project at the University of Strathclyde, and participated in the Intimate Migrations project at the University of Glasgow. Her research primarily focuses on sociology, gender, sexualities, youth studies, and disability studies, and she is especially passionate about the practical and philosophical elements of research methodology. A self-identified autistic person, Karen believes that autism research should be informed by the voices of autistic individuals. She is developing new research ideas in this area and is dedicated to an intersectional socialist-feminist approach that is aware of power inequalities and committed to societal transformation. Cuthbert's research interests include nonsexualities, sexual agency, gender inequalities, qualitative methodologies, and autism neurodiversity. She currently supervises PhD students on diverse topics and teaches various modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
