Biography

Karen Dorothy Essell graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene in 1969. She worked in private practice for forty years, practicing in various states before returning to Michigan to settle in a general practice. At the end of her career in private practice, she initiated a program in Washtenaw County Head Start centers that provided screening exams and fluoride varnish referrals for Head Start children. This program transitioned to the University of Michigan Dental Hygiene program, where it has provided dental hygiene students with invaluable community experience for ten years. Karen is a member of the American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) and has served as a delegate for the Michigan Dental Hygienists' Association (MDHA). She has been honored with several awards, including the University of Michigan Outstanding Dental Hygiene Alumnae Award in 2007, the Johnson & Johnson Hygienist Hero Award in 2008, the Francis Shook Award from MDHA in 2012, and the Emeritus Award in 2019. She enjoys the opportunity to interact with dental hygiene students, whom she describes as the future leaders in the field.
