Biography

Karen M. Fischer is a seismologist whose research focuses on studying the properties and dynamics of the Earth's interior. Her work primarily revolves around understanding the lithosphere and asthenosphere, including the processes that create, deform, and evolve these layers over time, as well as the roles of mantle dynamics and the origins of magmatism. Fischer's group analyzes and models seismic waveforms to measure the structure of the crust and mantle, investigating the signatures of both present-day and ancient plate boundaries, as well as mantle flow and melting processes. She engages in field-based seismometer experiments and develops new methods for resolving Earth's structure using seismic waves. Fischer has received numerous accolades for her contributions to the field, including the Inge Lehmann Medal from the American Geophysical Union and various teaching and mentoring awards at Brown University. Educationally, she earned a B.A. from Yale University and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University.
