Biography

Karen Jooste, MD, MPH, is a palliative care physician and pediatrician at Duke University. She works on the Pediatric Quality of Life team at Duke Children's Hospital Health Center, focusing on pediatric palliative and hospice care. Dr. Jooste completed her residency in Pediatrics at Children's Hospital New York, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and obtained her Master of Public Health from the Mailman School of Medicine at Columbia University. She also completed a Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at Duke. An integrative health coach trained at Duke Integrative Medicine, she is passionate about being a clinician educator, emphasizing communication, racial and gender equity, and ethics in medical humanities, particularly narrative medicine. Dr. Jooste teaches narrative medicine to interprofessional students including those in Medicine, Nursing, PT, and PA programs at Duke, and co-leads workshops in writing and health. As the Vice Chief of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for the Division of Palliative Care, she facilitates workshops to promote diversity, inclusion, and antiracism. In addition, she serves as an ethics consultant and is a member of the Professional Accountability team at Duke University Hospital, advocating for professionalism in medical practice.
