Biography

Karen Kohfeld is a professor in the School of Environmental Science at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on understanding the natural variability and biogeochemical linkages within the ocean-climate system, as well as assessing the Earth's response to anthropogenic perturbations. Kohfeld's work is concerned with both natural and anthropogenic changes in the ocean carbon cycle and the influence of climate and land surface conditions on atmospheric dust. She investigates adapting to extreme weather conditions in British Columbia and the influence of physical and biological oceanic conditions on the global carbon cycle over the past 140,000 years. Kohfeld has worked on projects examining sea ice dynamics in the Southern Ocean, changes in fire behavior over the last 10,000 years in western Canada, and the historic variability of wind speed relevant to hydroelectric reservoir inflows. She collaborates with geologists, marine biologists, and modelers across various disciplines to further her research.
