Biography

Karen Landman is a retired professor of Landscape Architecture and currently holds the status of College Professor Emerita within the Associated Graduate Faculty. With a passion for gardening from a young age, her academic interests span horticulture, landscape architecture, and planning geography. Over 20 years, she developed her own design practice as a professional planner. From 2002 to 2024, Karen served as a full-time faculty member in the Landscape Architecture program at the University of Guelph's School of Environmental Design and Rural Development. Her research focuses on green infrastructure, ecological design, urban forestry, urban agriculture, and biodiversity. The impact of climate change has increased awareness of the need for improved green infrastructure to enhance urban environments, reduce stormwater flooding, and bolster biodiversity. One of her research aims is to legitimate urban agriculture within cities through design considerations, ecological contributions, and social inclusion. Throughout her career, Karen has contributed to various scholarly publications and has been recognized with multiple awards, affirming her significant contributions to the field of urban planning and landscape architecture.
