Biography

Karen E. Matsukuma is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at UC Davis Health. She specializes in surgical pathology, with a focus on gastrointestinal pathology and anatomic pathology. Her research centers on the molecular basis of pancreatic and biliary cancers, particularly genotype-phenotype correlations and the identification of morphologic features that correlate with tumor behavior. Dr. Matsukuma has significant expertise in Hirschsprung disease and collaborates closely with pediatric surgeons at UC Davis. She completed her B.S. in Human Physiology at UC Davis, followed by an M.D. from UC Irvine College of Medicine, and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from UC Irvine. Dr. Matsukuma’s post-graduate training includes a residency in Anatomic Pathology at Stanford University and fellowships in GI & Liver Pathology at Johns Hopkins University and Surgical Pathology at Stanford. She has received numerous awards for her clinical research and teaching, including the Collaborative Interdisciplinary Research Award from the UC Davis Academic Senate in 2021 and the Resident Teaching Award from the UC Davis Department of Pathology & Lab Medicine in 2016.
