Dr. Milligan’s research focuses on improving the understanding of individuals' cognition and emotion regulation abilities and their impact on mental health and well-being, particularly through the application of knowledge in community-based interventions. Her work includes populations that experience challenges associated with neurodevelopmental disorders such as learning disabilities and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), as well as those facing substance use and mental health challenges. Dr. Milligan integrates the understanding of social determinants of health, such as social support, housing, and food security, into her work. Using a strength-based approach, she frequently partners with community treatment agencies, policymakers, and individuals/families to explore and implement innovative interventions that consider various influencing factors. Currently, her research primarily focuses on populations that include mothers with problematic substance use who are parenting young children, as well as youth with learning disabilities and co-occurring mental health challenges. In addition to her research, Dr. Milligan is a registered psychologist who works with children, adults, and families, with a particular interest in individuals experiencing co-occurring learning and mental health challenges. She serves as the Director of Clinical Training for Ryerson's CPA Accredited Clinical Psychology Graduate Program and is a clinical supervisor for clinical psychology students at the Ryerson Psychology Training Clinic.
