Biography

Karen Nokes joined UCL Faculty of Laws as a Lecturer in 2021. She holds a PhD in Business Management from the University of Manchester, an LLB from the University of Cardiff, and a BSc in Psychology from the Open University. Karen was admitted as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England & Wales in 1992. Prior to joining UCL, she was a Research Fellow at the Centre for Crime, Justice, and Policing at the University of Birmingham. Before her postgraduate studies, Karen was a solicitor in private practice, spending 20 years with the Law Society and the Solicitors Regulation Authority, where she held several senior posts, including Head of Practice Standards and Director of Supervision. She has extensive experience in legal regulation and practitioner engagement. Karen has received a scholarship from the Economic and Social Research Council for her doctoral studies and has presented at several national and international conferences. Currently, she is a co-investigator on an ESRC grant project titled 'Professional Pathologies, Causal Pathways Post Office Miscarriages of Justice', which is led by Professor Richard Moorhead from Exeter and has been awarded the 2024 ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize for Outstanding Societal Impact for the project's work to date.
